Discovery Through Innovation: Science In Action Featuring the 4th Annual Life Sciences AwardsCaliper Life Sciences to present and sponsor the 4th annual Life Sciences Award event. The event will be held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation on Monday, July 11th. During the event, the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation will provide approximately $70,000 in awards to a preeminent American scientist, three high school science teachers, as well as three high school students. The Foundation is currently in the process of receiving applicants for the Life Sciences Awards.

The Collaborative Future: A Case StudyIn our February 2010 special report, “The Time Has Come for Automation in Bioprocessing,” one theme that made itself clear was the need for vendors, biopharmaceutical companies, and sometimes even regulators to work together toward the goal of better, faster, and cheaper product development through (among other things) automation technologies. Martin Rhiel of Novaris cell and process R&D told us, “It would be really nice to just buy it and implement it, but this doesn’t always work. . . . Nowadays, the FDA is working together with pharmaceutical companies in implementing new technologies.”

In Vivo Imaging Technologies in Drug ResearchIn vivo imaging technologies provide insight into all stages of the drug development process from target identification to the optimization of clinical trials. By looking at disease processes and monitoring therapeutic effects in the living animal, researchers are able to unravel the complex biological events in real time and repeatedly image the same animals in a longitudinal study, providing a high level of statistical significance while sacrificing fewer animals.

Caliper Life Sciences recently entered into an agreement with SRU BiosystemsCaliper Life Sciences recently entered into an agreement with SRU Biosystems to use its label-free BIND technology to offer new functional assays as part of its discovery alliances and services. Under the agreement, Caliper will use SRU’s label-free BIND technology for high-throughput screening and profiling for cell-based and biochemical assays. Financial terms of the agreement were not released.

Because astrocytic gliosis marked by the deposition of fibrils composed of GFAP is a prominent feature of prion disease, we asked whether GFAP might be used as a surrogate marker for prions. A Spontaneous Acinar Cell Carcinoma Model for MonitoringWe have generated an EL1-luc/TAg transgenic mouse model that develops spontaneous and bioluminescent acinar cell carcinomas. We applied this model to noninvasively monitor tumor development and drug response. Experimental Design: EL1-luc/TAg transgenic mice of 11 weeks of age were treated with rapamycin (5 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle for 6 to 12 weeks. Tumor development was monitored through bioluminescence imaging and necropsy at the study end point . . .
