CALIPER LIFE SCIENCES LAUNCHES RAPIDKINASE PROFILING SERVICES AND MECHANISM-OF-ACTION STUDIES

September 2, 2008

- Screening Service Provides Researchers with Comprehensive, High Quality Results While Benefiting from Outsourcing Labor Intensive Projects -

Hopkinton, Mass., September 2, 2008 -- Caliper Life Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: CALP), a leading provider of tools and services for drug discovery and life sciences research, today announced the availability of two new service offerings from Caliper Discovery Alliances and Services (CDAS), the company’s contract research organization. These two services, RapidKinase™ profiling and enzymatic Mechanism of Action™ studies, both provide valuable resources to researchers looking to better understand the properties of their kinase inhibitor compounds.

The RapidKinase profiling service utilizes Caliper’s LabChip® EZ Reader™ technology and ProfilerPro™ reagents to provide kinase profiling data to researchers within one week. The RapidKinase service, which is part of CDAS’ comprehensive panel of more than 900 assays that are used to asses potential drug liabilities, enables researchers to benefit from the process improvements inherent to ProfilerPro reagents and also reap the organizational, cost, and workflow benefits of outsourcing.

Mechanism of Action studies provide researchers with detailed information about the manner in which their compounds interact with enzymatic targets and are important for characterizing allosteric inhibitors and assessing kinetic on and off rates. Allosteric inhibitors, which interact with enzyme targets at locations other than the active site, are important because the compounds with this activity often are in chemical spaces that have fewer competing patents. Compounds with slow off rates take a longer than normal amount of time to disassociate from the kinase, which allows lower doses to be used for treatments, decreasing the potential for side effects.

“The availability of these new services from CDAS reflects Caliper’s deep understanding of the scientific, clinical, and commercial advantage of rapid kinase profiling and mechanism-of-action studies,” said David Manyak, Ph.D., executive vice president, Discovery Services, Caliper Life Sciences. “For many therapeutic treatment groups within pharmaceutical and biotech companies, outsourcing labor-intensive screening is the best option. Through CDAS, our customers have access to Caliper’s proprietary LabChip platforms. As both a platform and service provider, Caliper remains committed to continually enhancing our offerings to facilitate the drug discovery process.”

The launch of CDAS’ RapidKinase profiling services coincides with the availability of more than 200 kinase assays, also announced today. The assays are available in Caliper’s ProfilerPro reagent format, a pre-packaged, ready-to-use kit that enables in-house kinase profiling to be performed in one day.
