In Vivo Optical Imaging

Non-invasive visible light imaging is now a widely accepted technology allowing researchers to follow many biological processes in healthy and diseased animal models. Xenogen Corporation (now Caliper Life Sciences) pioneered non-invasive optical imaging in small animals more than decade ago. As a leader in biology, physics and instrumentation, Caliper now provides the know-how, equipment and biological tools for non-invasive visible light imaging.  Caliper offers a suite of imaging tools to meet your needs from luciferase-labeled bacterial or cell lines, through transgenic mouse strains, to imaging systems or support services for your entire drug discovery program.

We offer a wide range of In Vivo Imaging Systems  (IVIS®):
1. IVIS® Lumina II. A bench-top system which can image 3 mice at a time sets the baseline for fluorescence and luminescence measurement.  Lumina II is capable of performing sensitive, two dimensional bioluminescence (e.g. luciferase-based), and fluorescence imaging with light emission measured in absolute units. IVIS Lumina II is supported with an extensive range of accessories to expand the breadth of your application portfolio such as high spectral resolved filter sets enabling spectral unmixing, an expansion lens to accommodate 5 mice imaging and an ECG monitoring system.

2. IVIS® Kinetic. The IVIS Kinetic offers quantitative real time, fast imaging and premium conventional imaging in one system. The system includes a highly sensitive EMCCD camera for signal enhancement and the ability to reduce exposure times to milliseconds enabling fast kinetics. The IVIS Kinetic is supported with the complete Lumina II accessory line and a syringe injector system offering simultaneous compound administration while imaging.

3. IVIS® Spectrum.  A no-compromise imaging system incorporating all the requirements for bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging, epi, and trans-illuminations, spectral unmixing, and three dimensional reconstruction of both bioluminescent and fluorescent signals.

Caliper also offers bioluminenscent substrates such as D-luciferin for non-invasive imaging using all native and modified firefly luciferases.   In addition, we provide fluorescent labeling kits (XenoFlour) with 680 nm and 750 nm dyes which are routinely used for in vivo imaging assays and optimized for use with the IVIS Systems.

Many critical scientific questions can be addressed using transgenic mice and Light Producing Transgenic Animals (LPTAs) in particular proof of concept studies, potential side effects, efficacy, etc.  We have more than two dozen LPTAs for Oncology, Metabolic Diseases, Inflammation, and Safety Assessment.
