RapidTrace® SPE Workstation

Overview

The RapidTrace SPE Workstation is a modular, highly scalable, automated sample prep high throughput Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) platform. Utilizing 1 mL or 3 mL industry standard SPE cartridges, the RapidTrace can process up to 100 samples in less than two hours unattended.

Each module can be loaded with 10 cartridges, and up to 10 modules can be connected together and controlled through a simple, easy-to-use software package. The modular design lets you add throughput capability as required. Modules within a group can run different methods, or modules can be separated and even used in different labs. The product is designed to maximize sample preparation and cleanup steps prior to sample analysis by LC/MS/MS or GC/MS.  The RapidTrace has been designed to eliminate SPE bottlenecks, so that labs can realize the full benefit of today’s powerful and costly analytical instruments.

The RapidTrace specializes in automating low volume solid phase extractions. It is currently being used in a wide variety of industry applications primarily for bio-extractions, and especially within the regulated pharmaceutical, clinical, and forensic environment. The product also provides utility in a variety of other industries, including the Tobacco, Food and Beverage, and even the horse and camel racing industries.

Feature Details:

Modularity
The RapidTrace is a modular system that allows a user to start with a minimum of modules and add on as workload demands.  Only Caliper LifeScience Corporation manufactured RapidTrace modules can be added to existing workstation for proper operation.

Modularity allows for continuous startup, loading samples into one module and initiating the run, loading up another module with more samples and initiating that run at a different time.

Should there be a problem with one sample, that specific module will shut down while others will continue to operate.  If you have ten modules and a problem occurs on one, 90% of your workload will still be completed on time.

Closed Platform
The RapidTrace is not an open platform as many other workstations are.  Once a run has been initiated, all samples are drawn within the modules to prevent any sample tampering or adulteration for better sample security.

Positive Pressure by Syringe Displacement
Positive pressure by syringe displacement allows the operator to set a specific flow rate much more accurately than vacuum or gas pressure.  Since many methods are flow rate sensitive, this improves repeatability.

Magnetic Racks
RapidTrace sample racks may be magnetically encoded with specific procedures for one touch operation.

Liquid Level Sensors
A sensor is located on the syringe to detect the presence of liquid.  If liquid is not detected, the sensor shuts down the modules and tells the operator which reagent line is empty rather than running the method without that reagent and yielding erroneous results.

Windows Software
Easy to use, point and click Windows software (compatible with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95) for ease of use provides a familiar interface.

Eight Reagent Lines

Segregated Waste Lines
The RapidTrace has four separate waste lines allowing the user to separate aqueous, organic and biological wastes for more economical disposal and a safer work environment.  Other workstations have a common trough where all reagents and samples collect.

Mixing Vessel
Reagent Blending capabilities yielding essentially a ninth reagent line where the operator can blend any of his eight reagents, especially useful in methods development.

No additional consumables required
Many workstations require costly sealing caps to form an airtight seal of the syringe with the SPE column.  The design of the RapidTrace eliminates this need.
